The origins of Mother’s Day
![]()
In the Netherlands, we celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. Where does Mother’s Day come from, and how do we celebrate it these days? And what are some really nice and original gifts to give (apart from the gift set mentioned above)? You’ll find the answers below!
A bit of history
We’ve been celebrating Mother’s Day for over 100 years! The first official Mother’s Day was celebrated on 10 May 1908 in the United States.
Het feest van de moeders is een eeuwenoude traditie, maar hoe begon dat nu allemaal?
In 1907, the American Anna Marie Jarvis began promoting the day as a day to honour mothers. Her own mother had dedicated herself to helping other mothers during the American Civil War. When she died in 1905, Anna Jarvis wanted to make the anniversary of her death a special occasion. She did so with great success: in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May a national holiday. We now know this as Mother’s Day.
Mothering Sunday is a day dedicated to one’s mother church – the church where one is baptised and becomes a ‘child of the church’ – and has been celebrated since the Middle Ages. On Mothering Sunday, Christians traditionally visit their mother church, the church where they received the sacrament of baptism.
Although Mother’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, it is not observed on the same day everywhere. In the United States, Canada and Australia, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, just as it is here in the Netherlands, whilst in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
Facts about Mother’s Day

>> Mothers-in-law are losing out by 13%.
>> Viva la Mama! The Dutch seem to love their mothers just as much as people in other countries

>> The best gifts are still your children’s crafts and drawings. And let’s not forget those adorable little poems left by your bed in the morning 🩷

>> Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year for restaurants. Lots of people take their mums out for a meal to treat them to something special. But of course, the best way to start Mother’s Day is with breakfast in bed!

Unfortunately
Unfortunately, Mother’s Day isn’t a joyful occasion for everyone. 💔
